Does Insurance Cover Myofunctional Therapy in Colorado?

On The Spot OMT does not bill insurance directly. We are an out-of-network provider, which means you pay for sessions at the time of service. After each appointment, we provide a detailed superbill — an itemized receipt with the procedure codes (CPT) and diagnostic codes (ICD-10) your insurance company needs to process a potential reimbursement claim.

Whether your insurance reimburses any portion of that cost depends on your specific plan, your out-of-network benefits, and whether the services are deemed medically necessary given your diagnosis. Many Colorado patients do receive partial reimbursement, particularly for therapy related to sleep apnea, TMJ dysfunction, or post-surgical rehabilitation.

Insurance plans are more likely to reimburse myofunctional therapy when it is clearly connected to a medical diagnosis. The strongest cases tend to involve obstructive sleep apnea (ICD-10: G47.33), temporomandibular joint disorders (M26.6x), post-frenectomy rehabilitation following tongue or lip tie release, and certain breathing and swallowing dysfunction diagnoses.

Having a referral or letter of medical necessity from your physician, ENT, or sleep specialist can significantly strengthen a reimbursement claim. If you have a documented diagnosis that connects to the therapy you're receiving, we will document our sessions accordingly to give you the best chance of successful reimbursement.

After each session, we provide a superbill with all the information your insurer needs. To seek reimbursement, contact your insurance company and ask about their out-of-network claim process. Most Colorado insurers accept submissions through their member portal, by mail, or by fax. Your superbill goes in with their standard claim form.

Before your first appointment, we recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking: 'Do I have out-of-network outpatient therapy benefits? What is my out-of-network deductible and reimbursement rate?' This takes about 10 minutes and gives you a realistic picture of what to expect.

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can use those funds directly for myofunctional therapy sessions. Orofacial myofunctional therapy qualifies as a medical expense under IRS guidelines, which means your pre-tax HSA or FSA dollars cover it without any reimbursement process.

Many Colorado families find this to be the simplest path — particularly those with high-deductible health plans. If you have funds in an HSA or FSA, using them for OMT is one of the most straightforward ways to offset the cost.

For patients whose plans don't offer meaningful out-of-network reimbursement, we're happy to discuss options. We can talk through scheduling cadence and program structure to help you plan costs. The goal is always to make therapy achievable — the program is designed to be time-limited, not ongoing indefinitely.

We also encourage patients to appeal insurance denials. The first denial is not always the final word, particularly when therapy is supported by a physician referral and documented medical necessity. We can provide supporting documentation to help with an appeal.
